A letter from my grandmother to my grandfather

My grandmother wrote this letter to my grandfather on November 28, 1927, a few days before their wedding. It's the letter I tried to read and couldn't on the day of my grandmother's funeral. The one Grandpa started to read to me but couldn't finish.

It's a very loving, sweet letter and every time I read it, my eyes tear up a bit. Just before her death, Grandma was unable to write letters but if she'd have been able to I think one to my grandfather would have read much the same as this. It seems as though they knew the secret to a happy marriage. I wish one of them had passed that secret on to me.

I just love the two cent stamp on the envelope. Those days are long gone but letter writing is still an inexpensive, fun, and wonderful thing. Well, it's inexpensive unless you're obsessed with stationery, pens, pencils, and the other stuff some of us seem to be. ;)

  1. How wonderful to have such a lovely keepsake and a beautiful way to unfold the memory of two people you so deeply love.

The stationery bug bit me when I was in my early teens, I spent most of my earned money at the local Hallmark store, thanks to my pat rack style I still have much of it left.

    1. Deborah, it really is a wonderful thing to have. I love looking through all the stuff in the tin box.

Yep, I was bitten by the bug at a pretty early age, too, thanks to my sister and mother!

  2. My mom has all the letters my grandma saved from my grandpa & her mom & mother-in-law. I'm trying to get her to scan/photocopy them so that we can all have them in some form (although our kids may have a hard time reading the Spencerian script of one of their great-great-grandparents).
I too was bitten by that stationery, pens & paper bug at an early age & sometimes it seems more like a serious disease. Even though I have enough to last several years, when I find something I like for a good price I just can't resist. It's a good thing we have both a Daiso & Ichi Ban Kan less than an hours drive & started making my own envelopes. ;)

    1. Jan, that's so sweet. I love when people save things like that and pass them down. That stationery bug seems to have bitten a lot of us! And I wish I had those stores you mentioned near me. I've heard of them and would love to see what they have. Oh, that would be dangerous, I'm sure!

  3. Had difficulty reading the entire letter. Please, please, please invest in a pair of Archiver's gloves and materials to save your inheritance.

  4. Limner, I use a pair of gloves that are very similar to archiver's gloves but you're right that I need to get a pair of those. I will do so very soon!
